What Is a Gas Technician in Ontario?

Gas technicians work with equipment and systems that use fuels such as natural gas and propane. This can include heating equipment, water heaters, cooking appliances, piping systems and other fuel-burning equipment.

Because improper gas work can create serious risks—including fire, explosion and carbon monoxide exposure—the trade is regulated in Ontario.

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) administers Ontario's gas technician certification program, while Ontario Regulation 215/01 establishes certification requirements for people performing regulated fuel-industry work.

For most people entering the trade, the progression is:

G3 → G2 → G1

What Is a G3 Gas Technician?

The Gas Technician 3 (G3) certificate is generally the starting point for someone entering Ontario's gas trade.

G3 training builds the foundation needed to understand gas equipment and safely work within the scope permitted by the certification.

What Is a G2 Gas Technician?

Ontario Regulation 215/01 generally requires a G2 applicant to already hold a G3 certificate, subject to the applicable certification requirements.

G2 training goes considerably further than the introductory G3 level.

Students can expect to develop stronger knowledge in areas including:

Ontario students should also be aware of a newer TSSA requirement.

Beginning January 1, 2026, G3 certificate holders who obtained their certification through the challenge process must provide evidence of 450 hours of G3 work experience before enrolling in a G2 program.

TSSA states that documentation can include an employer letter confirming the candidate's G3 work experience.

Certification requirements can change, so students should confirm their individual eligibility with TSSA or a TSSA-accredited training provider before enrolling.

What Is a G1 Gas Technician?

The Gas Technician 1 (G1) certificate is the highest of Ontario's three primary gas technician certification levels.

Unlike progressing from G3 toward G2, you cannot simply complete your G2 and immediately obtain a G1.

Ontario Regulation 215/01 requires a G1 applicant to already hold a G2 certificate and have worked within the G2 scope for at least:

2 years or 4,000 hours

Of those hours, at least:

500 hours must involve systems with an input greater than 400,000 BTU/h under the direct supervision of a G1 certificate holder.

Applicants must also satisfy the applicable training, examination and documentation requirements.

This means G1 is not simply another classroom credential. It represents advanced training backed by substantial field experience.

G3 vs. G2 vs. G1: What's the Difference?

G3 — Entry Level

The typical starting point. Students develop foundational knowledge of gas safety, equipment, combustion, piping, electricity and applicable codes.

G2 — Intermediate

Requires G3 plus the applicable TSSA training and experience requirements. G2 significantly expands a technician's knowledge and permitted scope.

G1 — Advanced

Requires G2 plus substantial documented field experience. This is the highest of the three primary gas technician certification levels.

Understanding why a system behaves a certain way makes technical requirements easier to apply.

2. Learn to Navigate Technical Material

Become comfortable locating and interpreting technical information.

Instead of attempting to memorize everything, practice finding the information you need efficiently and determining how it applies to the question.

3. Use Practice Questions

Practice questions can expose knowledge gaps faster than passive studying.

When you answer a question incorrectly, don't simply memorize the correct answer.

Then review the underlying concept.

4. Track Your Weak Topics

If you consistently struggle with venting, electrical theory, combustion, piping or another topic, direct more study time toward that area.

As your exam approaches, complete larger sets of questions with fewer interruptions.
