The current national exam outline has 125 multiple-choice questions, each offering four responses with one correct answer. Knowing how those questions are allocated helps you create a study checklist that extends beyond the plumbing work you encounter most often. Official Plumber exam information.

There is an important detail behind row F: the low-pressure-steam task is marked not common core, with zero questions. The 16 questions are allocated to hydronic piping/components and hydronic equipment. Use the counts as an exam study map. They do not define which workplace responsibilities you may ignore or which activities you are authorized to perform.

Establish your time budget
STO's June 2026 preparation guide gives four hours, a 70% passing grade, and paper or electronic delivery as specified in the exam confirmation. Ontario exam preparation guide.
For a four-hour, 125-question rehearsal, the overall average is 240 ÷ 125 = 1.92 minutes per question. That average includes checking, so it should not become a stopwatch limit for each individual problem.
Try an original 25-question rehearsal with a 48-minute total budget. Record how many minutes you spend finding information, calculating and reviewing uncertain answers. A delay caused by unfamiliar terminology needs a different response from a delay caused by repeated arithmetic errors.
Give your study notes three different jobs
The topic checklist records what you have covered. Use the activity headings above, then add the relevant task names from the official outline.
The error notebook records why an answer went wrong. Useful entries describe an action you can change: “I compared numbers with different units” is more useful than “I am bad at calculations.”
The reference list records where to verify a point. Give each entry a document title and a specific section or page from your own authorized learning materials.
Keep these notes alongside your study plan. Checking off a study session records that you completed the work; it does not, by itself, demonstrate mastery of that topic.
An original drawing-reading exercise
A fictional classroom sketch contains three straight measured lengths: 0.75 m, 1.20 m and 0.45 m. The question asks only for their combined length, with no additions or deductions.
Write the requested result first: “sum of the three supplied lengths.”
0.75 + 1.20 + 0.45 = 2.40 m
Now explain what this answer does and does not represent. It is the arithmetic sum of the stated dimensions. The sketch has not supplied fitting allowances, connection details or a purchasing specification, so 2.40 m is not automatically a material order.
For a second version, imagine that the middle label says only “1.20” and provides no unit anywhere. Your first task is to identify the missing unit, not silently assume metres.
These examples use actual invented dimensions, not nominal pipe sizes. Their purpose is to practise separating supplied information from assumptions.
Turn one weak topic into a 45-minute session
Choose a topic you have already attempted through the 306A preparation page. Set a modest objective, such as explaining one diagram or correctly setting up one calculation.
One possible session is:
10 minutes: review the relevant concept in your training notes.
15 minutes: attempt a small set without viewing its explanations.
15 minutes: explain each mistake and correct the reasoning.
5 minutes: record one follow-up task in your own notebook.
That totals 45 minutes. Change the balance if your evidence shows the difficulty is elsewhere. Use the CodeSafe learning resources for a foundational concept you need to revisit.
Confirm the administrative details separately
STO manages Ontario certifying-exam scheduling. Use its eligibility and Authorization to Test instructions, including the process for requesting accommodations before booking. STO exam scheduling.
Before your sitting, compare your confirmation with your calendar and the trade title on your study notes. Keep questions about permitted references or document editions for STO rather than assuming a familiar book will be supplied or allowed. Your final preparation should leave both a clear topic plan and a confirmed appointment.
